What is AFCI Protection and why is it important?

AFCI stands for Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter. These smart devices are designed to protect your home and loved ones from one of the most common causes of electrical fires – arc faults.

Arc faults happen when wires or connections become damaged or compromised, creating dangerous sparks. AFCI breakers constantly monitor your electrical circuits for these tiny sparks and shut them down before they can turn into a fire hazard.

AFCI Breaker or Receptacle?

AFCI protection comes in two forms: breakers and receptacles. An AFCI breaker is installed in your panel (like a regular breaker), and will provide arc-fault protection for the entire circuit. An AFCI receptacle is installed in place of a regular receptacle, and only protects the portion of the wiring downstream of it. AFCI receptacles have their applications, but AFCI breakers are preferred for more comprehensive protection.
